Brenda K. Sanya, PhD, RN, CPAN, NC
Brenda K. Sanya, PhD, RN, is a nurse researcher and an emerging leader in holistic wellness whose professional foundation spans both economics and healthcare. Trained in accounting and economics and holding a CPA from Kenya, she transitioned into nursing driven by a desire for deeper purpose and by enduring questions that followed the loss of her grandmothers. She entered the profession at the bedside as a Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA), progressed through Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Registered Nurse (RN) preparation, and subsequently earned a Master’s in Nursing Education (MSN Ed) then eventually a PhD in Nursing Research. She is a nurse researcher and holistic wellness advocate, bridging rigorous science with intuitive care, weaving together empirical evidence and lived wisdom in her work.
Key milestones in Dr. Sanya’s development were shaped by moments of insight that clarified her scholarly direction: weekly Wellness Wednesday emails from work that prompted reflection, nursing conference experiences that crystallized her commitment to nursing scholarship, and exposure to Gabor Maté’s work, especially When the Body Says No, which deepened her interest in the physiological and emotional dimensions of stress and healing. These influences informed her doctoral dissertation on mindful self-care among nurses and ultimately provided the conceptual foundation for her work in wellness.
Beyond her research, Dr. Sanya lives at the intersection of order and imagination. She's drawn to geometric patterns, especially circles, and loves to design spaces that pulse with intention. Her clearest insights arrive not at a desk but at the kitchen sink, where warm water flows and the rhythmic motion create openings for ideas that refuse to be rushed. She never underestimates the clarifying power of a well-crafted to do list.
If given the choice of any sanctuary, Dr. Sanya would disappear into an underwater room with floor-to-ceiling views of coral reefs, a place where silence, color, and wonder converge in perfect stillness.
